Newstead Wood Results 2026: What Your Daughter’s Score Means and What to Do Before 31st October

student learning online

If your daughter sat the Newstead Wood School Selection Test on Friday 25th or Saturday 26th September, her result arrives by email between Friday 16th and Thursday 22nd October 2026. This week matters. The national closing date for secondary school applications is Saturday 31st October 2026, so most families will have less than a fortnight between opening that email and submitting their Common Application Form.

This guide explains what the Newstead Wood result actually tells you, what to do next whether she qualified or not, and how Year 5 families can start preparing now for 2028 entry.

When Do Newstead Wood Results Come Out?

For September 2027 entry, Newstead Wood School emails results between Friday 16th and Thursday 22nd October 2026. They go to the email address you used when you registered in May or June. Check your junk folder, and do not assume silence means bad news. Results go out in batches across that week.

Kent Test results land on Thursday 15th October, so many families in Bromley, Bexley and the Kent border are waiting on two or three sets of results at once. Write every date down in one place before the emails start arriving.

What Does the Newstead Wood Qualifying Score Mean?

The qualifying score for 2027 entry is published as 210. Results are standardised and age weighted, so a girl born in August is not disadvantaged against a girl born in September.

Here is the part that catches parents out: qualifying is not the same as being offered a place. Newstead Wood has 168 Year 7 places, and far more girls reach the qualifying score than there are seats. Places are then allocated in priority order:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after girls who qualify
  2. Girls eligible for Pupil Premium or Service Premium who live within the 9 mile radius
  3. Other qualifying girls who live within the 9 mile radius, along with daughters of staff
  4. Qualifying girls who live outside the 9 mile radius

Within each group, girls are ranked by score. The radius is measured in a straight line from your home to the school’s main entrance on Avebury Road, Orpington.

So a qualifying score means your daughter is eligible. Her actual score, and where you live, decide whether that becomes an offer on National Offer Day, Monday 1st March 2027.

She Qualified: What to Do Before 31st October

1. Put Newstead Wood on your Common Application Form. You apply through your own home council, not through Bromley or the school. If you live in Lewisham, Croydon or Bexley, you apply through Lewisham, Croydon or Bexley.

2. Rank schools in your true order of preference. The system is equal preference. Putting Newstead Wood first does not cost you your second choice, and putting it lower does not improve your chances anywhere else. Rank honestly.

3. Use all six choices. A high qualifying score is encouraging, but it is not a guarantee. Fill your form with a realistic spread, including at least one school you are very likely to be offered.

4. Keep independent school options open. Many families sit independent school entrance exams in November, December and January alongside the grammar route. Those schools usually test English and maths, include a creative writing task, and hold an interview. If that is your plan, the next three months are the busiest of the whole process.

For the writing paper, our sister site 11 Plus Essay has structured creative writing courses built for exactly these exams. For the interview, The Independent School Interview Course (£75) teaches children how to answer personal, academic and opinion questions calmly and clearly, at home, at their own pace.

She Did Not Qualify: What to Do Now

First, look after your daughter. She worked hard, and a test on a Friday in September does not define how bright she is. Keep the conversation short, positive and focused on what comes next.

Then:

  • Check her other results. Kent, Bexley and other grammar tests are scored separately, and a lower Newstead Wood score does not predict the others.
  • Ask the school about reviews and appeals before you assume the door is closed. Every school publishes its own process.
  • Look seriously at independent schools. Some independent schools in and around Bromley still accept registrations for September 2027 entry, so check each school’s deadline directly. Their tests are different in style, and many girls who narrowly miss a grammar score do very well in them.
  • Book a free assessment if you want an honest picture of where she is in English, maths and reasoning before you choose the next step. Book a free assessment.

Year 5 Parents: Preparing for Newstead Wood 2028 Entry

If your daughter is in Year 5 now, she will sit the Newstead Wood test in late September 2027, for entry in September 2028. Registration is expected to open in early May 2027 and close at the end of June 2027. The school confirms exact dates each spring, and late registrations are not accepted, so put a reminder in your diary now.

What the Newstead Wood Test Covers

The Newstead Wood School Selection Test has two multiple choice papers: verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. There is no separate English or maths paper. This is the single most important fact for planning. A girl can be excellent at school English and maths and still struggle with timed reasoning questions she has never practised.

A Realistic Year 5 Plan

  • October to December: build the foundations. Learn every verbal and non-verbal reasoning question type properly, slowly and accurately. Vocabulary matters enormously in verbal reasoning, so daily reading counts as preparation.
  • January to March: add speed. Short timed sets, with mistakes reviewed every week.
  • April to June: mixed practice and mock papers. Register for the test as soon as the window opens.
  • July and August: an intensive. Full papers under real timings, so the September test feels familiar.
  • September: rest and confidence. No new material in the final fortnight.

Girls who start in the autumn of Year 5 rarely need to cram. Girls who start after Easter often do.

Reading Builds Verbal Reasoning

The fastest way to grow the vocabulary verbal reasoning rewards is to read widely and talk about what has been read. Our 11 Plus Reading Clubs run small online groups for Years 3 to 6, working through classic novels with discussion and vocabulary built in. They sit well alongside reasoning practice, and children enjoy them.
