Newstead Wood 11+ Preparation: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Only

Why a Newstead Wood only class?

Newstead Wood does not set an English or maths paper. The whole test is reasoning, so every minute of this class goes on the two papers your daughter will actually sit.

Two papersOne verbal reasoning and one non-verbal reasoning paper, both multiple choice and set by GL Assessment.
A required standardGirls need to reach the school’s required standard, currently 210. Scores are age standardised.
A nine mile catchmentPlaces are offered to girls who reach the standard, using the school’s admissions criteria.
Not taught at schoolVR and NVR are not part of the primary curriculum, so the question types need to be learned and practised.

Could your daughter answer these against the clock?

These are the kinds of questions on the Newstead Wood papers. Most girls have never seen anything like them at school.

Who it is for

Happy girl celebrating her school place

Girls currently in Year 5 who will sit the Newstead Wood test in September 2027, for a place in Year 7 in September 2028.

If Newstead Wood is the only school on your list, there is no point paying for English and maths preparation she will not be tested on. This class puts every minute into the two papers that decide her place.

What every place includes

  • One focused hour every week covering one verbal and one non-verbal reasoning technique, plus timed practice
  • Weekly homework, marked with written feedback, so you can see which question types need more work
  • A baseline test in the first session and a timed mock every half term, with a written parent report
  • A weekly vocabulary list to build the word knowledge verbal reasoning depends on
  • A maximum of 6 girls in every group, so no child gets lost in the room
  • Cover always provided, so classes are not cancelled
  • Registration reminders so you do not miss the school’s deadline (expected May to June 2027)
