About Year 4 preparation

Why Year 4 is the ideal time to start

The 11 Plus examination is taken in September or October of Year 6 and tests four subject areas: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Starting in Year 4 means your child has two full academic years to develop genuine mastery across each area, rather than cramming it all into Year 5. Children who start early consistently perform better not because they are brighter, but because they have had more time to build fluency and confidence.

Our Year 4 programme is not about pressure it is about building the right habits early. Expanding vocabulary, strengthening mental maths, becoming familiar with verbal and non-verbal reasoning question types these are skills that develop steadily over time. A Year 4 child who joins Geek School arrives in Year 5 already confident, already ahead, and ready for the intensive exam-year preparation that follows.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

No in fact, Year 4 is the ideal time. The most successful 11 Plus students typically start in Year 4 or earlier. Starting early means the preparation is gradual and enjoyable rather than stressful. Your child builds genuine knowledge and confidence over two years, which is far more effective than intensive cramming in Year 5.
Sessions cover all four subjects Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in a structured, progressive format at a pace appropriate for Year 4. Your child receives a printed session booklet for each class and a homework programme to complete between sessions. Groups are small, so your child receives genuine individual attention.
Not at all. Year 4 at any point in the academic year is still an excellent time to start. We will assess your child at the free assessment session, understand exactly where they are, and build a programme from that point. There is no need to wait for a new term.
Year 4 students at Geek School are typically targeting grammar schools in the Bromley, Lewisham, Sutton, Bexley and Kent areas including St Olave’s, Wilson’s, Newstead Wood, Sutton Grammar, Dartford Grammar and the Medway schools. Many families are also preparing for independent school entry at 11 Plus or 13 Plus. We will advise you on the right schools for your child’s strengths.
