Hayes in the London Borough of Bromley is one of the most convenient locations in South East London for access to the region’s best grammar schools and to our Beckenham centre. St Olave’s Grammar School is around eighteen minutes from BR2 by car. Newstead Wood is fifteen minutes. Both fall within the nine-mile priority radius. Wilson’s School in Sutton is around twenty-five minutes. And our Beckenham centre on Beckenham Road is ten minutes away, a shorter journey than most families in the borough have to make.
At Geek School Tutoring, we have been preparing children for these schools since 2013. More than 1,000 families have trusted our programme. Our founder Joycellyn Akuffo sat the 11 Plus herself, prepared her own two children for independent school entrance, and has spent more than a decade developing a programme that prepares children specifically for the exams they will sit rather than a generic syllabus.

Schools Hayes Bromley Families Target: What Each Exam Involves
St Olave’s Grammar School
St Olave’s uses a two-stage process. Stage 1 is a multiple-choice Selective Eligibility Test covering English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. The top 450 scorers are invited to Stage 2: written papers in English and mathematics. The Stage 2 English written paper requires genuine analytical extended writing, and it is where thorough preparation in written English makes the most significant difference to results. Children from Hayes who have spent two or three years building analytical writing skills with us consistently perform better at Stage 2 than those who have focused only on VR and NVR.
Newstead Wood School
Newstead Wood uses GL Assessment papers covering verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning only. No English or maths paper. Minimum qualifying score of 210, nine-mile priority radius. Hayes BR2 is within that radius. The GL VR and NVR papers reward familiarity and speed with question types that are not taught in the primary school curriculum. Building that familiarity from Year 3 or Year 4 produces consistently stronger results than intensive preparation in Year 5.
Wilson’s School and the Sutton Consortium
Wilson’s uses the Sutton Test covering English, maths, and verbal reasoning. The same test is used for Wallington County Grammar, Sutton Grammar, and Nonsuch High School for Girls. Sitting it once makes your child eligible for all consortium schools. Wilson’s is one of the highest-ranking state schools in England and is extremely competitive. The English writing component is significant, and we prepare children for this alongside VR and NVR within the same programme.
Year 3: Starting Close to Home
We take children from Year 3, and for Hayes Bromley families, the short journey to our Beckenham centre makes starting in Year 3 especially practical. Year 3 preparation is relaxed: reading widely, building vocabulary, and a gentle introduction to reasoning question types. There are no mock exams at this stage. The benefits of starting in Year 3 show clearly in Year 5 and Year 6 results, and the shorter commute from BR2 means attending consistently from an early year is easy.
Children who start at Year 3 arrive at their Year 6 exams with a settled, confident relationship with the work. They are not encountering question types for the first time under pressure. They are demonstrating skills they have been building for three years.
Year 4 and Year 5
Year 4 introduces the full programme across English, maths, VR, and NVR with timed exercises built in from the start. Year 5 moves into full school-specific mock papers under timed conditions, individual written feedback, and a programme adjusted after each mock based on each child’s results. We focus the available time on the areas where each individual child will gain the most marks.
