The most common question we hear from parents in Year 4 is whether it is too early to start thinking about the 11 Plus. The honest answer is: no. In fact, Year 4 is one of the two best times to start, the other being Year 3. Children who begin 11 Plus preparation in Year 4 do not work harder than those who start in Year 5. They work more sustainably, build skills rather than cram them, and arrive at their Year 6 exams genuinely confident rather than under pressure. That confidence is visible in exam papers. Examiners see it immediately.
At Geek School Tutoring, we take children from Year 3 onwards. We have been preparing children for grammar and independent school entrance exams since 2013, and over 1,000 families have trusted our programme. Our 100% pass rate for Kent and Medway grammar schools reflects what is possible when preparation starts at the right time and covers the right ground. Our founder Joycellyn Akuffo is a journalist and experienced tutor who sat the 11 Plus herself and prepared her own two children for independent school entrance. She knows this process from every angle.

Why Year 4 Is the Right Time to Start
The 11 Plus tests four subjects: English comprehension and writing, mathematics reasoning, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. The last two are not taught in the primary school curriculum at all. They are entirely new skills for most children, and they take time to build, not days, but months or years of regular practice. A child who begins VR and NVR in Year 4 has a full year to become fluent with the question types before the exam approaches. A child who begins in Year 5 is learning new skills while also trying to manage increasing pressure from school, mock exams, and the growing reality of the exam date.
The same argument applies to English and mathematics. The 11 Plus tests English comprehension and creative or extended writing at a level above what primary school typically covers. It tests maths reasoning and problem-solving at a level that requires specific preparation beyond the Year 5 and Year 6 curriculum. Starting in Year 4 means these skills can be built at a sustainable pace rather than under pressure.
What Year 4 Preparation at Geek School Looks Like
English Comprehension and Writing
In Year 4, we focus on building reading comprehension skills: identifying the main idea in a passage, understanding inference, recognising how writers use language to create effects, and answering questions precisely and at the right length. Alongside comprehension, we begin developing creative and extended writing skills, structure, vocabulary, sentence variety, and the kind of writing voice that makes an exam answer stand out. Joycellyn’s journalism background informs every aspect of this teaching.
Mathematics Reasoning
Year 4 maths preparation goes beyond the curriculum to introduce the problem-solving and multi-step reasoning questions that grammar and independent school entrance papers test. We cover number work, fractions, ratio, algebra reasoning, geometry, and data handling at the level the exams require, building both fluency and the habit of showing working clearly.
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
We introduce all VR and NVR question types systematically in Year 4, starting at a manageable pace before building speed under timed conditions. By the end of Year 4, most children are comfortable with the main question types and working on speed and accuracy. This is a much less stressful experience than encountering VR and NVR for the first time in Year 5.
What About Year 3? We Start There Too
We take children from Year 3, which is even earlier than most families consider. Year 3 preparation is gentle and exploratory: reading widely, building vocabulary, understanding how good writing works, and a very relaxed introduction to reasoning question types. There are no mock exams in Year 3. The goal is building a love of language and a habit of careful thought. Children who start in Year 3 arrive at Year 4 already ahead of their peers in reading confidence and writing ability, which makes every subsequent year of preparation more effective.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Year 4 too early to start 11 plus preparation?
No. Year 4 is one of the best times to start, alongside Year 3. The 11 Plus tests verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills that are not taught in school and take time to build. It also tests English and maths at a level above the primary curriculum. Starting in Year 4 gives your child the time to develop these skills at a comfortable, sustainable pace rather than under the pressure of Year 5 and Year 6.
Do you take children from Year 3?
Yes. We take children from Year 3, which is earlier than most tutors. Year 3 is relaxed and exploratory: reading, vocabulary, and a gentle introduction to reasoning question types. There are no mock exams at this stage. Children who start in Year 3 arrive at Year 4 ahead of their peers in reading and writing confidence, which makes every subsequent year more effective.
What if my child is already in Year 5 and we have not started yet?
Year 5 is absolutely workable. We help many children who start with us in Year 5, and they achieve strong results. The preparation is more intensive than for children who started in Year 3 or 4, and the programme is more focused and less relaxed. But with the right starting point and consistent effort, Year 5 is far from too late. Book a free assessment and we will give you an honest picture of where your child currently stands and what is achievable.
How many sessions per week does a Year 4 child typically need?
One session per week in Year 4 is typically sufficient, alongside the homework we set after each session. The pace at Year 4 is steady and sustainable rather than intensive. Some families prefer two sessions per week if they are targeting the most competitive schools, but we would generally advise against over-scheduling a Year 4 child. The goal at this stage is consistent engagement, not pressure.
What happens at the free assessment for a Year 4 child?
The free assessment takes around 45 minutes and covers English comprehension, mathematics, and a short verbal reasoning exercise. We are not testing to see if your child is good enough, we are establishing their starting point so we can plan a programme that is right for them specifically. We give you a clear, honest picture of where they are and what they need. There is no obligation to book after the assessment.
