GCSE Science Tutor: Biology, Chemistry and Physics for Grades 8 and 9

GCSE science marks are commonly lost not through lack of knowledge but through imprecise answers. A student who understands osmosis thoroughly can still lose marks if they describe it in everyday language rather than the specific scientific terminology the mark scheme requires. A student who knows how a reflex arc works can still fail to gain full marks if their answer omits a step or misuses a key term. Our GCSE science programme addresses this directly: we teach students not just the content but how to write scientific answers at grade 8 and 9 level.

At Geek School Tutoring, we offer GCSE tuition in biology, chemistry, and physics for AQA and Edexcel. We cover both combined science and triple science. Our students regularly achieve grades 8 and 9. In 2022, our GCSE cohort achieved 100% grade 8 and 9 across all three subject areas. Sessions run in small groups of up to six at our Beckenham and Catford centres, and online for students across South London and beyond.

What Our GCSE Science Tuition Covers

Biology

Cell biology, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics, homeostasis, inheritance and evolution, ecology. We cover the full AQA and Edexcel specifications with particular attention to the extended answer questions that differentiate the top grades. Students learn to use biological terminology precisely and to structure longer answers in the way the mark scheme rewards.

Chemistry

Atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding and structure, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, energy changes, rates of reaction, organic chemistry, and chemical analysis. Calculation questions in chemistry are a common source of lost marks. We build fluency with mole calculations, titrations, and percentage yield through repeated, structured practice.

Physics

Forces, energy, waves, electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism, particle model of matter, radioactivity, and space physics. Equation application and unit conversion are where many physics marks are lost. We work through past paper questions systematically, ensuring students can identify the correct equation, substitute values correctly, and present their working in the way that secures full marks.

Required Practicals

Both AQA and Edexcel include required practical questions in the exam papers. Students who are unfamiliar with the practical procedures and their expected results lose marks on these questions even when they understand the underlying science. We cover all required practicals across the three sciences and ensure students can answer method, result, and evaluation questions confidently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer tuition in all three GCSE sciences?

Yes. We offer tuition in biology, chemistry, and physics, covering both combined science and triple science for AQA and Edexcel. Students can attend sessions in individual sciences or across multiple subjects depending on where they need support.

What is the difference between combined and triple GCSE science?

Combined science produces two GCSE grades covering all three sciences and is worth the equivalent of two GCSEs. Triple science produces three separate GCSE grades, one for each science. Triple science provides greater depth and is often advantageous for students considering science or medicine at A Level. We prepare students for both routes.

When should my child start GCSE science tuition?

For students aiming for grades 8 and 9, starting in Year 9 or the beginning of Year 10 gives the most time to cover content and build exam technique sustainably. Year 11 support is also available and valuable, particularly for focused revision in the months leading up to exams.

What exam boards do you cover?

We cover AQA and Edexcel for all three sciences across both combined and triple science. We confirm the exam board at the assessment stage and align all teaching and past paper practice to the correct specification.

How do you help students improve their extended answer questions?

Extended science answers require precise use of scientific terminology, clear logical structure, and answers that directly address the command word. These are skills many students underuse, even when they know the underlying science. We work through past paper extended answers explicitly, showing students how mark schemes award marks and what grade 8 and 9 answers look like compared to grade 5 answers for the same question.

Returning Families: From 11 Plus to GCSE Science

Many of our GCSE science students came to us originally for 11 Plus preparation and return for GCSE support. The transition from the 11 Plus to GCSE science is significant: the content depth, precision of language, and exam technique required at GCSE level are considerably greater than at Key Stage 2. Families who experienced the quality of our 11 Plus programme consistently return for GCSE, knowing the approach works. If your child prepared with us for the 11 Plus, we would be glad to support them through to their GCSEs as well.
