11 Plus Writing Prompts PDF: What to Look For and Where to Download Them

Finding free 11 Plus writing prompts PDFs online can feel like a lucky dip. Some are too easy, many don’t match the actual exam format, and almost none come with the structure and vocabulary guidance that makes practice genuinely useful.

This guide explains what to look for in a good 11 Plus writing prompts resource, and why the format of the prompts matters as much as the topics themselves.

Why Generic Writing Prompts Don’t Work for the 11 Plus

Most creative writing prompts found on general teaching websites are designed for broad KS2 literacy development. They encourage imagination and enjoyment (which is great for everyday writing), but they don’t prepare children for the specific demands of selective school entrance exams.

11 Plus writing assessments reward: sophisticated vocabulary choices, varied sentence structures, clear narrative or argument structure, and an ability to write with pace and detail under timed conditions. A prompt that says “Write about your favourite holiday” won’t develop these skills the same way a carefully designed exam-style prompt will.

What Good 11 Plus Writing Prompts Look Like

  • Clear, specific briefs – “You are standing at the entrance to a crumbling, forgotten house. Describe what you see, hear and feel as you step inside.” This gives children a concrete starting point, reducing the ‘blank page’ panic.
  • Varied stimulus types – picture prompts, first-line starters, scenario descriptions and open titles all appear in different exam papers. Good practice covers all of them.
  • Genre-matched vocabulary – the best resources include word banks, sentence starters or technique reminders specific to the writing style being practised.
  • Exam-appropriate length and scope – prompts should encourage an A4-side length of writing, which is the typical 11 Plus target, not short paragraphs.
