Sydenham SE26 families have a genuinely unusual range of school options. Dulwich College and James Allen Girls’ School are around twelve minutes by car. Alleyn’s is similar. Sydenham High School (GDST) is close. Newstead Wood and Beths Grammar are within twenty minutes. Few SE postcodes have access to this breadth of outstanding secondary schools, and many Sydenham families pursue both the grammar and independent school routes simultaneously. The challenge is that each school uses a different exam format.
At Geek School Tutoring, Sydenham families can reach either of our centres in around fifteen minutes. Our Beckenham centre on Beckenham Road, BR3 and our Catford centre on Campshill Road, SE13 are both accessible from SE26. We have been preparing children for the schools popular with Sydenham families since 2013, and our founder Joycellyn Akuffo’s journalism background gives our English teaching a consistent advantage in the written papers that Dulwich, JAGS, and Alleyn’s use to identify their top candidates.

Schools Sydenham Families Target: What Each Exam Involves
Dulwich College, Alleyn’s and JAGS
Dulwich College uses written papers in English and mathematics with an extended writing component. Alleyn’s and JAGS use the ISEB Common Pre-Test as initial screening, followed by written papers in English and mathematics. For all three schools, the written English component is the most significant differentiator between well-prepared and outstanding candidates. Our journalist-led English teaching gives children a real advantage here.
Sydenham High School (GDST)
Sydenham High is an independent girls’ school very close to SE26. It uses its own entrance assessment. Many Sydenham families target it alongside JAGS or Alleyn’s. The school values girls who read widely and write with confidence and accuracy.
Newstead Wood School
Newstead Wood uses GL Assessment VR and NVR papers only, with a minimum qualifying score of 210 and a nine-mile radius. Sydenham falls within that radius. For families also considering Newstead Wood alongside independent schools, we incorporate GL Assessment VR and NVR preparation into the same programme.
Year 3: Getting Ahead of the Competition
We take children from Year 3. Sydenham’s position between our two centres makes it particularly practical to start early. Year 3 is relaxed and exploratory: reading, vocabulary, and gentle reasoning familiarisation. For families targeting both the Dulwich independent schools and Newstead Wood, the breadth of skills required makes early preparation especially valuable.
Children who start in Year 3 arrive at their Year 6 exams writing at a level that is hard to replicate in twelve months of intensive preparation. They also have a settled relationship with the work that means Year 5 is focused rather than frantic.
Year 4 and Year 5
Year 4 introduces the full programme across English, maths, VR, NVR, and ISEB pre-test preparation. Year 5 brings full school-specific mock exams under timed conditions, individual written feedback, and a programme adjusted after each mock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Geek School centre is closer to Sydenham?
Both our Beckenham and Catford centres are around fifteen minutes from SE26. The right choice depends on your exact location and travel preferences. We can advise at the assessment stage. Many Sydenham families use our online sessions to avoid the journey entirely.
Do you take children from Year 3 in Sydenham?
Yes. We take children from Year 3. For Sydenham families targeting both independent and grammar schools, starting early is especially valuable because of the breadth of skills required. Year 3 is relaxed and exploratory, not pressured.
Can my child sit for both Dulwich/JAGS and Newstead Wood?
Yes. Many Sydenham families target both pathways simultaneously. The skill sets overlap significantly, and we prepare children for both within one programme. The GL Assessment VR and NVR papers Newstead Wood uses are different in format from the ISEB pre-test used by Alleyn’s and JAGS, and we cover both.
What is Sydenham High School’s entrance exam?
Sydenham High uses its own entrance assessment, typically covering English and mathematics. The school looks for girls who read widely and write with confidence and accuracy. We include Sydenham High preparation within the same programme as other independent school preparation.
How do I choose between targeting grammar schools and independent schools from SE26?
Many families do both. The schools in your area mean your child has access to excellent options across both categories. The free initial assessment helps clarify which schools are realistic targets at your child’s current level and what preparation schedule makes sense. There is no need to choose one route over the other, we cover both in the same programme.
