11 Plus Tutor in Blackheath: Expert Preparation for Dulwich, Eltham College and Grammar Schools

Blackheath SE3 families tend to be ambitious for their children’s secondary education, and with good reason. Dulwich College, Alleyn’s, James Allen Girls’ School, Eltham College, and Colfe’s are all within twenty minutes. Beths Grammar and Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar are within thirty. Few areas of South East London have access to this range of outstanding schools, and many Blackheath families target both grammar and independent schools simultaneously.

At Geek School Tutoring, we have been preparing children from SE3 for these schools since 2013. Our Catford centre on Campshill Road, SE13 is around fifteen minutes from Blackheath by car. More than 1,000 families have trusted us. Our founder Joycellyn Akuffo is a journalist who spent more than twenty years writing for national media titles including Cosmopolitan and BBC Good Homes. Her approach to teaching English and creative writing is built on professional craft, not generic formulas, and it shows in the exam papers her students produce.

Schools Blackheath Families Target: What Each Exam Involves

Dulwich College, Alleyn’s and JAGS

Dulwich College uses its own written entrance exam with an English paper containing comprehension questions and an extended writing task, alongside a mathematics reasoning paper. Alleyn’s and JAGS both use the ISEB Common Pre-Test as an initial adaptive online screening, followed by the schools’ own written papers. For all three schools, the written English component is where thorough preparation most directly pays off. Children who have been taught to write with craft and precision rather than formula produce consistently stronger papers.

Eltham College

Eltham College uses a two-stage process: the ISEB Common Pre-Test followed by the school’s own written English and mathematics papers. Children who pass both are typically interviewed, and interview preparation is available through our sister site IndependentSchoolInterview.co.uk. Eltham College is co-educational and academically selective, with a nine-mile catchment that covers all of Blackheath.

Beths Grammar and Bexley Grammar

Both Beths and Bexley Grammar use GL Assessment multiple-choice papers covering English, mathematics, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. The VR and NVR elements require specific preparation, as they are not taught in the primary school curriculum. For Blackheath families also considering grammar schools alongside independent schools, we incorporate GL Assessment preparation into the same programme.

Year 3: Getting Ahead of the Competition

— wp:paragraph –>

We take children from Year 3. For Blackheath families targeting Dulwich, Alleyn’s, or JAGS, starting in Year 3 is the approach we most strongly recommend. The extended writing ability these schools test for develops over time, not in a sprint. A child who has spent two or three years building their writing craft with us arrives at their Year 6 exam writing at a level that is very hard to replicate in twelve months of preparation.

— wp:paragraph –>

Year 3 sessions are calm and exploratory: reading good books, discussing what makes writing effective, and beginning to write with intention. There are no mock exams at this stage. The goal is building a love of language and a habit of careful thought that pays dividends throughout the preparation years and in the exam room itself.

YYXR 4 and Year 5

In Year 4, the full programme covers English comprehension and extended writing, maths reasoning, and systematic VR and NVR work. Timed exercises are introduced early. In Year 5, we run school-specific mock exams under timed conditions with individual written feedback on every paper. We adjust the programme after each mock to focus on the areas where each child has most room to improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child start 11 plus preparation in Blackheath?

For independent schools such as Dulwich, Alleyn’s, and JAGS, we recommend starting in Year 3 where possible, or Year 4 at the latest. For grammar schools, Year 4 is a strong start. Year 5 is workable but more intensive. The earlier your child starts, the more relaxed and effective the preparation process is.

Do you take children from Year 3?

Yes. We take children from Year 3, earlier than most tutors. Year 3 is exploratory and low-pressure, focused on reading, vocabulary, and building confident writing. The benefits show clearly in Year 5 and Year 6 results.

Should we focus on grammar schools or independent schools from SE3?

Many Blackheath families pursue both simultaneously, and there is no reason not to. The skills required overlap significantly. We prepare children for every school on their list within one programme, covering the different exam formats without doubling the work.

What is the ISEB Common Pre-Test?

— wp:paragraph –>

The ISEB pre-test is an adaptive online assessment covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, and mathematics. It is used by Alleyn’s, JAGS, Eltham College, and many other independent schools as an initial screening. Children sit it once and the score is shared with multiple schools. Familiarity with the adaptive format and question types is important preparation.

Does Eltham College require an interview?

Yes. Children who pass the ISEB pre-test and written papers are typically invited to an interview. Interview coaching is available through our sister site IndependentSchoolInterview.co.uk, built specifically for 11 Plus independent school interviews.
