I’ve been preparing children for the 11 Plus exams, for GCSE English language and GCSE English literature exams for almost a decade at Geek School Tutoring and I have seen recurring and common creative writing mistakes. It is quite interesting to teach across this primary and secondary age range, especially when the same writing mistakes crop up in their work.

Over the years, I have seen a running theme of mistakes – and they can usually be avoided in creative writing.

Many children who struggle with their writing and make common creative writing mistakes tend to make the same spelling mistakes across the age groups; they make the same structural errors, and they lack the same types of grammatical content that would help improve their writing scores.

In this video, I discuss some of the mistakes that c children make in their creative writing – and (more importantly) what to do about them to help boost test or exam scores.
