What Our 11 Plus Creative Writing Course Covers
Four strands, taught together, so writing improves in every direction at once. Available in Beckenham, Catford and online.
Story Writing
A flexible story structure that works for any prompt. Not a rigid formula, but a toolkit children can adapt under pressure: character, setting, tension, dialogue and a satisfying ending in limited time.
Persuasive and Discursive Writing
How to build an argument, use rhetorical technique naturally and sound confident writing about a topic they have never considered before. This transfers straight into secondary school English.
Vocabulary and Language Techniques
Not memorised word lists. We teach how language actually works, metaphor, simile, personification, sentence variety and paragraph rhythm, so technique appears naturally under exam conditions.
Timed Practice and Feedback
Children write to the clock every week and every piece comes back with detailed written feedback, the same kind of marking the examiners use.
Why Creative Writing Is the Hardest Part of the 11+
The creative writing section catches more children out than any other part of the 11+. Your child might be flying in maths, verbal reasoning and comprehension, but when the timer starts and they have to produce a compelling story or essay from scratch, the words just will not come.
Most 11+ tutoring focuses on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths, because those are the easiest to drill. Creative writing is harder to teach, so many tutors avoid it or fall back on generic advice like “use ambitious vocabulary” and “write a clear structure”. That is not enough to get a distinction at a competitive grammar school.
Examiners are looking for original ideas, a confident authorial voice, precise word choices and the ability to build atmosphere and tension, all within a 30 to 45 minute window. Those are skills that need to be practised repeatedly with expert feedback, not mentioned once in a lesson.

Small Groups. Marked Writing Every Week.
Creative writing only improves when a child writes often and someone who knows the mark scheme reads every piece. Our groups are capped at six children so that is actually possible, at our Beckenham centre, our Catford centre, and online.
- Max 6 students per class
- Weekly timed writing under exam conditions
- Every piece marked with written feedback
- Real past paper prompts from grammar and independent schools
- Regular progress reports for parents
- One-to-one sessions also available
Online Creative Writing Tuition
Cannot make it to Beckenham or Catford? Our live online lessons give your child the same course, the same tutors and the same weekly marking, from anywhere in the UK.
- Live Zoom sessions with Geek School tutors
- Same small-group format, max 6 children
- Interactive whiteboards and shared resources
- Writing submitted and marked between lessons
- Flexible scheduling options

How the Programme Works
We start with a free one-hour assessment. That shows us exactly where your child is: whether they struggle to get started, lose structure mid-essay, or have the ideas but not yet the language to express them. From there we place your child in the right group and build a plan around what needs to improve most.
Sessions run weekly at our Beckenham or Catford centre, or online through our interactive live platform. Each session combines direct teaching, guided writing practice and feedback. Children also complete writing tasks between sessions, which are marked and returned before the next lesson.
Clear, Transparent Pricing
Creative writing is taught inside our 11+ English lessons, so it is included in every programme below. No hidden fees.
