Most independent schools use the GL papers for their 11+ verbal reasoning papers because they usually have a written English paper. The CEM verbal reasoning test tends to have a large crossover with English (lots of vocabulary and some comprehension questions), so independent schools currently tend to use GL for their verbal reasoning tests, as the content is different to this.
However, more increasingly, many schools are using the CEM-adaptive format as their first stage exam and then inviting students to take the written paper thereafter.
